There Were 5 Of Them
With Shariff Hidayatullah, there could be 5 Shariffs as my father used to tell me that there were 5 of them and one of them was in Indonesia. The rest of the Shariff were Brunei, Philippines (where Sulu is), Johor and the other one he was not so sure.
My Imagination
There were many similarities in the names of places in Sabah, then North Borneo or North Kalimantan and that of Java especially west Java, where lies the port of Cirebon and the Cirebon Sultanate.
For example in Sabah he have places like;
Sipitang
Sikuati
Sibuga
Sibatik
Sisipit
Simunul
Sibuku
Sibutu
SiAmil
In Java we have places like'
Cirebon,
Cianjur,
Cipanas,
Ciawei,
Cinkareng (which was just hit by the powerful earthquke) and many others.
The difference is only in the letters but the sound quite similar. As was mentioned earlier people in the past went by the sound and not the words of everything as they had not formal education then.
There had been some twinning or it could have been the same person responsible for those names.
For example in Sabah he have places like;

Shariff Hidayatullah of Wali Songo
We have to mention the name of Shariff Hidayatullah, one of Wali Songo or the 9 Saints of Java. He was the only Saints had had the title of Shariff, similar to the title of the Shariff in Negara Brunei and Sulu Kingdom. Could he had some relation to the 4 Shariffs that we had mentioned in earlier post in this blog? With the help of the Sultan Of Demak, he took over Banten in 1424/25 and this date was the date that Shariff Ali was appointed the 3rd Sultan Of Brunei until 1432. Around this time (1450) the Sulu Sultanate was founded too.
The son of Shariff Hidayatullah, Sultan Hasanudin became the first Sultan of Banten and his grand son, Sultan Yusuf followed suit. Shariff Hidayatullah founded the Cirebon Sultanate. Cirebon is located in the northern part of Java Island, about five hours journey by road from Jakarta.
The story I gathered, one of the Shariff sailed back (place not known),but the story teller mentioned Johor. He could be Shariff Hidayatullah as he was also the one sent to China as an Ambassador and married the Chinese princess named Ong Thien.

5 Conquerors
The Chinese claimed that the Chinese Emperor sent the 5 Conquerors led by Teck Seng in search of the Pearl Flag.
These were the first wave of the Chinese migration to the land called Guomantong, which is the old name for Sabah but now remains the cave in Sabah East Coast that supplies the bird's nest.
Could these 5 Conquerors be the 5 Conquerors in Peninsular Malaysia sent by the Chinese Emperor to also protect the Malacca Sultan from outside forces? The 5 Conquerors could well be the 5 brave men led by Hang Tuah.

Land Of The 7 Generation
KALIMANTAN is sometimes called the Land Of The 7 Generation. What does the 7 Generation really imply?
As you know it, INDONESIA especially JAVA is the Land of the 9 Scholars or Wali Songo and
PENINSULAR MALAYSIA is the Land Of the 5 Conquerors.
7 Generation could bring the meaning that KALIMANTAN had been inhabited by 7 major races. I could only locate the colors of these generation namely;
Yellow
Red
White
Green
Lilac
Orange
Navy Blue
It could have been the following races;
HINDU INDIAN
CHINESE
SULU
ARAB
DUSUN
MUSLIM INDIAN/PAKISTAN/BENGAL/BANGLADESH
EGYPTIAN/MOROCCON/SUDAN/ETOPHIA/AFRICAN
North Kalimantan or Sabah as we now call this place has 7 Chief Ministers in a span of about 12 years and they are as follows;
Tun Sakaran Dandai
Datuk Mohd Salleh Said
Datuk Yong Teck Lee
Tan Sri Bernard Dompok
Datuk Osu Sukam
Datuk Chong Kah Kiat
Datuk Seri Musa Aman
Could they have been the descendants of the 7 Generation in Sabah in these modern days?

Journey To The East
THE JOURNEY TO THE BORNEO, MINDANAO AND SULU
Another story I gathered, there were six of them and two of them were women that had sailed from Johor, Peninsular Malaysia including the father or the older person.
In the past Old Johor includes Malacca and Singapore Island. The older person could be Shariff Ali, the third Sultan of Brunei and his first wife. The other lady could be the lost child of Shariff Ali and the granddaughter of Sultan Iskandar Zulkarnain of Johor/Malacca who was given the gold ring.

Majapahit Kingdom And Spice Islands
LEGACY OF THE MAJAPAHIT KINGDOM AND SPICE ISLANDS
It was posted earlier that the capital of Sarawak, Kuching could have been derived from the name of the place in India called COCHIN as was BRUNEI which was known in the history as PUNE and PUNE is also a place in Western INDIA too although I am more inclined to believe that the word BRUNEI could have come from the word , the river that meets the WHITENILE in the place now called BLUENILESUDAN in front of the HILTON HOTEL SUDAN.
SUDAN was formerly known as UPPER EGYPT and had been the supplier of the agricultural produce to ARABIA including Mecca and Medina. It is believed that the confluence of these two rivers is the beginning of history of many of the Prophets in Islam including Prophet Hidir and Moses.
The capital of MAKASSAR in South Celebes is called GOA and GOA is also in West INDIA. These could be names given during the MAJAPAHIT KINGDOM which rules the eastern part of Indonesia which had resemblance to their Indian rulers in this part of the world. The Island Of BALI in East Indonesia still stands tall as a Hindu heritage despite the many colonization by the European including the Dutch, British and others.
This part of the world is famous for its spices and other natural resources that were highly sought after items in the more developed countries in Europe, India, Arab countries and China. The islands in the Moluccas had been well-known as a popular trading routes among the European and visited by many traders.

The Place Of Enlightment Called KALIMANTAN
OTHER NAME FOR BORNEO
BORNEO is also called KALIMANTAN.
To some people the word kali means river and mantan means tiger or macan.
Others relate Kalimantan to the flourescent light or the light that we use to light up our house, while others relate it to the name of the Hindu Goddess, Kali and Mantan means the Tiger. One of the Hindu Goddess show her sitting on a Tiger. or Tigress.
Whatever the meaning and the reason, KALIMANTAN or BORNEO is full of mystics that is worth exploring.
There was also a missionary in Java from one of the 9 Missionaries called Sunan Kalijaga. He could be the Missionary that looked after KALIMANTAN.

The Beginning Of Islam From The South
THE COMING OF ISLAM FROM SOUTHEASTERN BORNEO
The coming of Islam to BORNEO from the south was the work of Wali Songo or the 9 Missionaries/Scholars through one Pangeran, whose tomb is in Tanah Grogot, a province of about five hours by road from Balikpapan in a place called Pasir. The Pangeran was said to have migrated from Surabaya in East Java Indonesia which is well known for some of the 9 Missionaries including Sunan Ampel and Sunan Gersik and who could somewhat be related to Suanan Ampel. The period was the rise of the the 9 Missionaries or Wali Songo in Indonesia. Could he be the Raja Sumakwel who had gone to Java to deepen his religious knowledge with Sunan Ampel in Surabaya? The tomb could have mentioned his surname in Sultan Abubakar,from Sulu Sultanate.
The title of Pangeran is commonly used in Negara Brunei and in Java , given to people of high esteem, similar to the title of Shariff and Rajah.
Of course the SE BORNEO is very near to SULAWESI and GOA, where Islam had also started very well there.
The history of the Cocos Islander Community mentioned a place called Pasir in Tanah Grogot Indonesia where they assembled their men before they left for Cocos Islands.

Where Was Raja Sumakwel?
The tomb of Raja Sumakwel, the other son of Shariff Hassan had not been located.
However the Cocos Islander Community had one person by the name of Suma who was also commonly known as the bald grandfather or Nek Botak. Suma, the 12 year old child that followed the ship called BORNEO from Banjar Kuala only happened in the early 18th Century. So Raja Sumakwel could not be the same Suma whose tomb is in Cocos Islands, but Suma could have some relation to this lineage or could have used Raja Sumawel name for his name.
The title of Rajah was normally given to people of other origin like Rajah Brooke or White Rajah as he was commonly known or the Indian, Chinese or non-Arab lineage and the highest title is called Maharaja and Maharani.
Only the descendants from Mecca or other Arabian provinces had been given the title of Shariff or the knowledged person and their children have titles like Syed and Saidina for men and Sharifah for the woman.

Shariff Ali The Third Sultan Of Brunei
SHARIFF ALI THE 3RD SULTAN OF BRUNEI
However the history of Brunei cited Shariff Ali, a merchant and son in law of the Brunei Sultan being elevated as the 3rd Sultan of the Brunei Sultanate. Could he be the Shariff Ali Zainal Abedin that had landed in Johor as they had the same name in Shariff Ali and Shariff Ali married the daughter of the Sultan of Brunei, who could also be his second wife. The tomb of Shariff Ali could be found at Kota Batu in Negara Brunei DS.
Shariff Hassan landed in Brunei but could be another part of Brunei as Brunei’s territory had spanned BORNEO ISLAND as well as the PHILIPPINES from Tg Datu in Sarawak to Luzon in the Philippines and Kalimantan Indonesia.
The tomb in North Borneo, now Sabah could only be that of Shariff Hassan as Shariff Makdum tomb is in Simunul Tawi Tawi, an island that is closest to North Borneo.

Saidina Abubakar Shariful Hashim
SULTAN SAIDINA ABU BAKAR SHARIFUL HASHIM
In our earlier post, we did mention about the name of Almahrum Sri Paduka Maulana Sultan Saidina Abu Bakar Shariful Hashim.
The Sultanate of Sulu extended to BORNEO. This goes to show that this respected Sultan was also the Sultan for North BORNEO at least for the Eastern part as the Western part had been under Brunei.
The people in Kg Marudu Laut and Kg Shariff Osman claimed there were formerly under Brunei until Shariff Rom Osman married the daughter of the Sulu Sultanate named Dayang Sayak.
This could also be the reason why the Bajau Laut community is still living at Kg Marudu Laut, a village at the river bank supposedly after they had fled Pulau Jambongan, an island off Sandakan.

The Birth Of Sulu Sultanate
THE BIRTH OF THE SULU SULTANATE
The daughter of Rajah Baguinda got married to Abubakar, an Arab scholar and missionary and a prince from Sumatera, Indonesia.
Abubakar established a Sultanate named Sulu Sultanate in the year 1450 and by the end of the 15th century the Sultanate of Mindanao was established in Southern Philippines. This was later than the Shariff Ali Sultanate era in Brunei from 1425-1432.

Sharif Ali Zainal Abedin
SHARIFF ALI ZAINAL ABEDIN
The vintas of Shariff Ali Zainal Abedin landed in Johor or stayed back in Johor and married the daughter of Sultan Iskandar Zulkarnain, the Sultan Of Malacca, who was an Indian by origin in the nama of Parameswara, a merchant from Sumatra before he converted to Islam and took up the name of Iskandar Zulkarnain, by the name of Putri Jusul Asikien.
Their children were;
Shariff Bonggo,
Shariff Alawi,
Shariff Mangenta
Shariff Kabunan, while the last child disappeared but Sultan Zulkarnain of Johor/Malacca had given a gold ring studded with 7 carats of diamond to the mid-wife for the lost child (daughter).
What could be the reason for the loss of the last child, other than the will of God? She could have been given away for adoption as she would not be carrying the name and title of Shariff. Only men carried the title of Shariff. Why did Sultan Zulkarnain then gave the gold ring studded with 7 diamonds to the mid-wife for the child if she had vanished?
Some stories claimed that she was put in a box and drifted like the story of Prophet Moses in the Bible and Koran but was taken by someone, who was a respected or important person at that time, could be a price or a scholar.
The history of Meriam Ratu Hijau in Medan, Sumatera had caught my imagination. Could she be the lost daughter of Shariff Ali Zainal Abedin because history tells us that her influence spread very far including the Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatera.

SHARIFF ALIMUDDIN

The Coming Of Islam To The East
SHARIFF AHMAD OF MECCA
Shariff Baguinda is the son of Shariff Ahmad or Akmad of Makka who was married to Putri Tammat, the daughter of the King of Yemen. He and three of his other brothers came to east. The title Baginda is normally used to the highest title for king.
The names of his other brothers were;
Shariff Alimuddin,
Shariff Hassan and
Shariff Ali Zainal Abedin
Their boats hit a storm off Ceylon, now Sri Lanka resulting in them making their own way on their boats called ‘vintas’.
They landed at the shores of Sumatera.
Here Comes The Shariff
Shariff is the title given to a person in the past who were considered knowledgeable and normally they were the descendants of the Arab from Mecca or Taif and their descendants hence carry the same title, but only for the male person.
There were so many stories about the Shariff in this part of the region and people were so proud about these Shariff that they called them the respected ones as these people did not want glamour or titles because they were originally traders as well as missionaries, but they were lucky to have been married to the daughters of Sultan. This had happened in Johor, Brunei, Sulu and other provinces. They came at the height of the propogation of the Muslim religion in the early 14th Century. They were said to have possessed certain powers and miracle like walking on the water or the sea.
